Side bumper related parts
It is compulsory to install an anti-entanglement device on the side of the truck's wheelbase to prevent pedestrians and cyclists from getting caught. This entanglement prevention device is generally called a side bumper. Side bumpers come in various sizes and shapes depending on the size of the truck and the specifications of the loading platform.
Purpose of side bumpers
Since trucks have a longer wheelbase and higher vehicle height than passenger cars, side bumpers must be installed on the sides to prevent people or bicycles from getting caught in the rear wheels while driving. Also, because the vehicle height is high, some people put their feet on the side bumpers as a step to get on and off the loading platform.
Safety standards for side bumpers
Note that side bumpers have different safety standards depending on the size of the truck. Specifically, the basic conditions are that the shape is an integral plate, slatted, net-like, or rod-like (3 or more), and that the distance between the front and rear wheels and the flat part of the bumper (not including corners) is 400 mm or less. .
〇 4 number small trucks and light trucks
No safety standards have been established.
〇 Trucks with a gross vehicle weight of less than 8 tons or a maximum load capacity of less than 5 tons
Any structure that minimizes the risk of pedestrians and bicyclists getting caught in the rear wheels is acceptable. For example, even a side bumper shaped like a single steel pipe conforms to safety standards. The distance between the front and rear wheels and the flat part of the side bumper (not including corners) is 400mm or less. The distance from the lower edge of the side bumper to the ground is 600mm or less when the vehicle is empty.
〇Trucks with a gross vehicle weight of 8 tons or more or a maximum load capacity of 5 tons or more
The shape is one-piece plate, slatted, net-like, or bar-like (three or more), and the distance between the front and rear wheels and the flat part of the side bumper (not including corners) is 400 mm or less. When the vehicle is empty, the distance from the lower edge of the side bumper to the ground is 450 mm or less, and the distance from the upper edge to the ground is 650 mm or more. In addition, the distance from the upper edge to the cargo bed, etc., is stipulated to be 550 mm or less.
If you do not meet the above criteria, you will not be able to pass the vehicle inspection, so be careful when installing the side bumpers.
