Laws and Regulations Related to Marker Lamps

Trucks over 6m in length must be fitted with side lights (marker lamps). This is to ensure safety by showing the size of the truck to the surrounding cars with the side lights at night. The law stipulates that the lighting of the side lights can be confirmed from a distance of 150 m from the side at night and that they do not interfere with other traffic.

In addition, there are detailed standards for installation positions and colors. The distance between adjacent side lights is within 3m, the front side light is within 3m from the front end of the vehicle, the rearmost side light is within 1m from the rear end of the vehicle, and the ground clearance is 1.5m or less, 0.25m or more. must be The color is stipulated to be "orange" ("red" is also acceptable if it also serves as a tail light at the rear). In addition, it must be an ECE standard certified product.

Marker lamps as "other lights"

Marker lamps other than side lights that are obligated to be installed as described above are legally classified as "other lights". Since other lights have different legal standards from side lights, it is possible to install marker lamps other than orange.

However, there are legal standards for marker lamps as "other lights", and orange lights (under 2.5m above the ground) on the side of the vehicle and red lights on the rear must not be provided, must not blink, and must not have a luminous intensity ( brightness) must be less than 300 candela.

There are other detailed standards in the laws and regulations regarding "side lights" and "other lights", so if you want to know more, please refer to the safety standards of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism.

In addition, light bulbs have been the mainstream marker lamps until now, but light bulbs have the disadvantage of being susceptible to vibrations during driving and having a short life. In addition, glass lenses for marker lamps are produced in a kiln, resulting in low productivity and high costs due to sluggish demand. For this reason, LEDs, which have a much longer life than incandescent bulbs and are suitable for mass production due to their resin-molded lenses, are now the mainstream.
